Garnet

- Mohs hardness rating: 6.5-7.5
- Found in Burma, Sri Lanka, South Africa, China, US, Tanzania, Australia.

This lovely stone was probably named for the deep, almost blue-red color of pomegranate seeds. Rich red tones are what people generally associate with the garnet, but it can occasionally be found in deep yellow and bright greens.

The garnet has a long history of use as a medicine stone and was used for healing blood and lung diseases. European folklore gave the garnet its reputation as an arthritis pain reliever and a depression alleviator. Like the blue topaz, the garnet is said to block bad dreams. The sensual red stone also promotes passionate attraction. On the more spiritual side, wearing the garnet increases imagination and provides inspiration during moments of reflection.
